The Battle for France and Belgium, May 1940 - A Flames of War Firestorm Campaign Tournament

Using the Firestorm Campaign System by Jokull Gislason and Battlefront Miniatures, we will be refighting the campaign for Belgium and France 1940

Tournament Features
  • No Blue on Blue! Germans will fight against the British and the French

  • 100 Point Early War Armies of Germany, France and Britain from the Blitzkreig Book

  • Elected German and Allied High Commands, who will plan the battles and determine which commanders have access to precious battlefield assets in the form of Firestorm Units

  • Bespoke Firestorm Units will be available to both High Commands to allocate to generals in critical sectors!

  • Stuka Schwerpunkt available to the German High Command, bringing with it enhanced priority air support

  • 4e Division Cuirassee and 1st Army Tank Brigade units will be available to the Allied High Command to represent de Gaulle's counter charge at Montcornet and the Charge of the British at Arras

  • Suppy rules will play a vital part in campaign success. Armies fighting whilst out of supply may incur severe penalties!

  • The Maginot Line - at least 1 battle per campaign turn will be fought in the Maginot Line sectors as the Germans try to keep the French honest!

  • Prizes will be awarded to the Best German and Allied Generals

Stuka Schwerpunkt!
  • German Players may not add Stuka Dive Bombers to their base 100 point list

  • Instead, to reflect the German mastery of close air support for their ground forces, the German players get limited air support in every battle!

  • The German player rolls for aircraft to arrive as normal but they arrive on a 5+ instead of the normal 4+

  • The German High Command can assign priority air support to one German commander only on each campaign turn. This lucky general receives air support on a 4+ for the duration of their battle

  • The German High Command places the Stuka Schwerpunkt after all battle arrows and Firestorm units (including Allied Special Units) have been placed

High Command
  • The Allies and the Germans will each have a High Command of up to 3 players

  • Upon Entering the Campaign players will indicate whether they would like to be considered for a High Command role

  • Prior to the event there will be a secret ballot where players from each side will vote for their High Command (assuming more than 3 players per side enter the ballot!)

  • The High Command will be responsible for their sides overall strategy - what victory locations to drive for, encirlcing manouvres to cut enemy supply lines, placing of battle arrows to determine where the battles will take place, assigning commanders to their battles, the placement and allocation of Firestorm Units to individual players

Firestorm Units
  • Both High Commands will have Firestorm Units available to allocate to lucky generals!

  • There will only be one of each named unit in the campaign (eg 1 German XVI Korps / 1 BEF etc)

  • Firestorm Units for each side can be seen to the right - note some involve a dice roll - this dice roll is rolled prior to each game that the unit is being used in

  • The Campaign Organiser will supply all Firestorm Units - Players only need to bring their 100 point Armies

The Maginot Line!
  • Two areas on the campaign map represent the Maginot Line - Areas F5 and F12

  • Both Start the campaign with Firestorm troops from both sides in them

  • The Germans must attack at least one Maginot Line area each Campaign turn until they break through

  • The Maginot Line is a tough nut to crack, so the Germans need win these areas twice to capture them. If the Germans win for the first time they do not capture the area but must retreat as if they had lost. To mark that they have won their first victory then the French Fortification Firestorm Unit is turned upside down in the area

  • If the Germans win a second time they capture the area. French Firestorm Units may retreat but they now become Infantry Firestorm Units and appropriate markers will indicate them on the campaign map

  • In all battles where the German player has the initiative and chooses to fight a battle across a Fortified Boundary the Allied player will choose to be the defender in the mission. They then fortify their positions with Maginot Line Fortifications and play a No Retreat Mission with the additional rules , Fortified Defence (Defender) and Fortified Reserves (Defender) - See Maginot Line Forces Graphic across :

  • The attacker force points is 100

  • All Maginot Line Fortifications will be supplied by the Campaign Organiser

Campaign Map
  • The Campaign will be played on the campaign map to the right

  • Each location has an area code : eg Paris is located in area F9

  • Each location also has a campaign victory point value : eg Paris has a victory point value of 100

  • If the Germans have not earned a complete victory (see later) then the victory point locations will be tallied up at the end of the campaign and the victor and level of victory calculated

  • An updated map will be on display throughout the weekend showing : control of regions, Location of Firestorm Units, Battle Arrows, areas out of supply

Campaign Victory Outcome
  • Complete German Victory - If at the end of the Campaign, the Allied side has lost 2 or more Firestorm Units (not counting special units) and the German side controls one of the following areas : F6,F7,F9 or F10 then the French will declare Paris an Open City and thus the Germans will gain a Complete Strategic Victory

  • Otherwise the victory points will be tallied up on both sides and a level of victory determined as per the ampaign points chart and campaign outcome graphic shown on the right

  • A special separate Victory outcome can be won by the allies. If the BEF Firestorm Unit spends two turns in Dunkirk (F1), then it is removed from the campaign at the end of the second turn and the BEF have been saved by the Miracle of Dunkirk and the British gain a Moral Victory! The Germans do not receive victory points as if it were captured but its still counts as being lost as in regard to the Complete German Victory (see above)

This Firestorm Campaign Tournament is a mildly modified version of the most excellent Firestorm Blitzkrieg France by Jokull Gislason and published by Battlefront. The original PDF can be found on the Flames of War Official Facebook page and I think on the Battlefront Flames of War Web page. I would like to thank Jokull for the outstanding work he has put into this and for inspiring me to create this Firestorm Campaign Tournament.

Please note that I have made one or two small adjustment to the original - mainly the Stuka Schwerpunkt and the rules regarding the amount of Firestorm Units available

You didn’t come this far to stop
